Never put wood in the dishwasher. Simply wash with dish soap in warm water and dry as quickly as possible
-
When wood starts to look a little "dry", apply a little food safe mineral oil or conditioner.
-
Apply to surface and let soak in for a few minutes. Then wipe off excess. Do not use cooking oils as they will go rancid.
-
Wax based products (mineral oil and wax mixture) provide better protection than just mineral oil, therefore need to be applied less often.
-
If wood takes on an odor (cutting onions, cheese, etc.), squeeze out some juice from a lemon, let sit for five minutes, then wipe clean. Odor should be gone. If it isn't, simply repeat.
-
To remove scratches or stains, sand lightly with as fine of a grit as it takes to remove scratch/stain. Finish to about a 220 or higher grit. Sand with the grain until scratch disappears. This will also remove the finish, so simply re-apply mineral oil / wax.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Simple, regular maintenance will not only keep your "wooden treasures" looking new for years to come, but is also important in terms of food safety.

Clapham's Beeswax Salad Bowl Finish is outstanding for maintenance of any of my wood products, or for that matter, any wood products that are finished with mineral oil and/or wax based products. It is completely food safe and simple to use...simply wipe on and wipe off. It is available locally or online.
