MY PHILOSOPHY
The over-riding philosophy in my work is very simple...
to showcase the inherent, natural beauty of wood.
Wood by it's very nature is unique..no two pieces are exactly the same. When I select materials for my projects, I try to not only bring out this uniqueness, but also to highlight the beauty of the wood itself. This is accomplished by:

1. Carefully selecting every single piece of wood, only picking those which have the qualities I am looking for..focus on grain pattern and color.

2. I employ a technique called "bookmatching" . Commonly used by woodworkers, bookmatching is achieved by "slicing" the wood in two. The pieces are then opened like a book. What you are left with are two pieces having a distinct resemblance, which is not quite a mirror image, because of the variability of the wood and the amount of material removed. The pieces when joined result in a striking "bookmatched" pattern.

3. I carefully choose a combination of contrasting or complimentary woods to frame and showcase the main bookmatched piece.

4. I generally do not color or stain the wood, and prefer to finish with a clear (foodsafe) coat to retain the natural color of the wood.
